Sonya, I enjoyed reading through your action plan, and I can tell you have put a lot of thought into the strategies you will use to improve student mastery of Science vocabulary. The ladder, Total Words Report and Around the World vocabulary games are great ideas, and I think I may try implementing them in my own classroom next school year. Your outcomes are very clear, and I think the strategies/activities you have selected to achieve these outcomes are very appropriate. Will you incorporate any vocabulary quizzes throughout your units? That might be a quick and easy way to check for understanding and also provide you with data along the way. It also might be interesting to survey the students at the end of the school year to see which vocabulary strategies they felt were most beneficial. That would give you some qualitative data as well. I am glad I found your blog site we are so close with me being in Sweeny now. We actually have a football game this fall against the Cowboys. Look forward to following your blog. I like the way you set it up it was easy to follow. Great topic that is to the point. I like the way you picked a topic that is relevant in today's time. The importance of literacy in schools is paramount in education, and word walls is just one example of great ideas to gain understanding. I know this is a work in progress just like all of I know changes will come. Looking forward to keeping up with yours..

DeleteSonya - Great topic! I really encourage extensive vocabulary with my students no matter what grade level I'm teaching. Here are a couple of more things to think about for a suggestion - have students come up with movements for learning vocabulary. We know that children learn best by movement. There is an author, Susan Griggs, that wrote some literature on the mind in motion. Also, any of the tools/graphic organizers from the Frayer model are great resources. I know that my campus utilizes a lot of these vocabulary strategies and have had great success especially with our ELL/LEP learners. I'm looking forward to the progress of your plan!
